The moment I learned how to make oat milk, I became obsessed! It takes less than 10 minutes and requires very few ingredients, making it perfect for everything from coffee and smoothies to pancakes and muffins.

Of all plant-based milks, oat milk is probably my favorite. It’s incredible creamy, the taste is great without a lot of sweetener, and what you’re going to see is Surprisingly, it’s very easy to make in your kitchen!

All you need is a blender and rolling oats to whip fresh oat milk. You can easily add it to your morning coffee or cold beer, use it in one of our smoothie recipes, or enjoy it with the cereals. Plus, whenever I bake and suddenly realize I’ve used up my milk, homemade oat milk is my hero! I use it to make delicious vegetarian pancakes, vegetarian blueberry muffins and more!

Key Ingredients

  • Oatmeal: These are your best choice of cream, perfectly mixed oat milk (also what I use for everyday oatmeal). Avoid instant oats as they can cause a sticky texture due to more treatment. Wire oats may work, but are not usually recommended as they are difficult to mix and will not give you the creamy texture we expect. If you are gluten-sensitive, be sure to choose gluten-free certified rolling oats.
  • cold water: This is the secret weapon against sticky oat milk! Using ice-cold cold water when mixing helps control the starch in the oats, thus preventing this gummy, viscous texture.
  • Elective: Feel free to flavor your homemade milk with sweeteners like vanilla extract, sea salt, cocoa powder or maple syrup or honey. You can even make strawberry oat milk and mix in some strawberries (best)!
How to Make Oat Milk: Filter homemade oat milk.

The secret to the best homemade oat milk (a type that is never slimy or fudge) in two key steps. In addition to mixing the oats with ice-cold water, you must also filter the liquid thoroughly. Use nut milk bags, clean cotton cream, and even a few layers of cheese clips to clear off the remaining oatmeal, which produces a silky smooth consistency, perfect for everything from coffee and smoothies to baking needs.

Simple homemade oat milk

Our homemade oat milk recipe is really easy to make. Just keep two things in mind for the best results. First, use rolled oats and ice-cold water. Cold water prevents oat milk from becoming sticky. Secondly, use a nut bag, a clean dish towel or a few layers of cheese clips to filter the oat milk. Exhaustion will remove all the extra oats, which will make your milk sticky and fudge. The staining is so useful that I like to filter the oat milk twice. Once ready, enjoy oat milk in my favorite smoothies like blueberry smoothies or make these incredible vegetarian pancakes!

Made 3 cups

You will need

1 cup (115g) rolled oats

4 cups (945 ml) cold water

1 to 2 tablespoons maple syrup or honey, optional

1/2 to 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, optional vanilla oat milk

Pinch fine sea salt, optional

direction

1Mix oats and water: Add oats, cold water and any optional ingredients to the mixer. Cover the lid with the lid and mix for 30 to 40 seconds. If you see few spots in oats, it doesn’t matter. It is best not to over-fusion as this will lead to a slimy texture.

2Filter oat milk: To prevent further stickiness or fudge texture, filter the oat milk. Use it through a nut milk bag, a clean cotton towel or a large bowl or a multi-layer cheese cloth secured by a pitcher. I like to double-strike the mixture so that most solids are removed.

3storage: Store homemade oat milk in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week. Shake or stir before use.

Adam and Joanne’s Tips

  • Make strawberry oat milk: Add to frozen berries as berry-flavored milk. Fresh can be good, but cold berries help reduce starch.
  • Chocolate Oat Milk: Add one or two tablespoons of cocoa powder and taste it sweet with maple syrup or honey.
  • Why are my oat milk separated? Some separations are completely normal. Stir or shake the milk before use.
  • Homemade oat milk foam? Unfortunately, no. Store-buyed oat milk, more ingredients (such as stabilizers) are added to the foam to help it foam and heat it without being sticky.
