Marinara sauce is a sauce that is thinner than spaghetti sauce, with very little added sauce. Spaghetti sauce tends to be thicker, more enthusiastic and bolder.

Ingredient tips for Marinara sauce

  • tomato: Combined with crushed and canned tomatoes and tomato sauce. Although the price is slightly higher, I like the fresh flavor added by San Marzano tomatoes. Fresh tomatoes can be peeled and added.
  • vegetable: Onions and garlic add flavor, while chopped carrots add sweetness and balance the sourness of the tomatoes.
  • sugar: Depending on the brand of tomatoes, you may not need the sugar in this recipe. If the sauce is sour, add one or two or two. However, you can omit sugar altogether if you want.
  • Seasoning: Before boiling in step 5, add dry seasonings (such as DIY Italian seasonings). Fresh herbs should be added before consumption. Some red pepper flakes or sriracha splashes give homemade marinade a little darling!
  • Variations: Snuck away in chopped zucchini or a little squash or pumpkin as a natural sweetener and nutrition enhancer. Or add ground beef and turn it into a hearty homemade spaghetti sauce.
